Aquaponics
Aquaponics is the combination of:
- Aquaculture ("Fish Farming")
- Hydroponics ("Growing plants without soil")
Aquaponics, by its very design, is farming in a natural form.
In order for the fish to thrive, there must be an ample supply of oxygen and clean, chemical-free water.
The plants add oxygen to the water, remove the nitrates and nitrites, and purify it as the water passes through the growing beds.
The plants are fed the "nutrients" passed to them by the fish.
In essence, the fish take care of the plants and the plants take care of the fish in a full-circle life cycle.
The addition of chemical fertilizers would, in fact, kill the fish. The addition of non-organic food matter to the fish, would, ultimately, kill the plants
Interest and implementation of Aquaponics is increasing across the globe. It is a viable answer to the issues of waste management, resource management, sustainability and food supply
production.
